Dieting vs. a healthy diet
Why is it that whenever I talk about my eating habits or turn down cake or doughnuts everyone assumes I am on a “diet”? Or they say “I need to get back on my diet”.
I am not on a “diet” and they shouldn’t be either. Or should I say everyone has a diet. Some are healthy, some are not.
Rather than go on a “diet”, I have chosen to make healthier choices. I have instituted a lifestyle change. What I choose to eat is healthy and nutritious and I can live on this diet for the rest of my life.
Going on a “diet” is usually taken to mean a short term change in eating habits to lose weight, lower your cholesterol, improve your type II diabetes. But if you go back to your old way of eating the weight will come back, the cholesterol will go up and the diabetes will be out of control again.
A lifestyle change and healthier choices is a lifelong process so that whatever progress you get will last. It is something you do for rest of your life. because if you don’t the rest of your life may not be as long or as healthy.
In 2004, the Center for Disease declared that obesity is the #1 health threat facing America. 2 out of 3 Americans are overweight or obese. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, and type II diabetes are greatly on the rise.
The good news is that these conditions are controllable and preventable. All it takes is a lifestyle change that incorporates healthier eating habits and a reasonable amount of exercise.
You owe it to yourself to be as healthy as you can be. Today is the day.
